The man in charge of hybrid powertrain development at GM Larry Nitz has confirmed that the E-Flex team has made the decision to switch engines for the range extender in the upcoming Chevy Volt. The original concept was to use a turbocharged 1.0L three cylinder engine to drive the generator. Instead they have decided to use a 1.4L normally aspirated version of the engine that will power the upcoming Chevy Cruze in turbo form. Nitz also discussed the issue of why performance of the Volt won't be degraded when running in charge sustaining mode, the status of the Plug-in Vue and expansion of Two-Mode hybrid availability. Full explanations are available in the Green Fuels Forecast interview.

Smart currently has an electric version of its little ForTwo runabout... um, running about in Europe known as the Smart ed. Using a a sodium-nickel-chloride (commonly called a Zebra) battery, the 41 horse electric motor has plenty of power to move the vehicle around, and urban performance is actually said to be improved over the standard model. So far, the electric smart has only been for testing, but that looks to be changing rather soon. According to Dieter Zetsche, a fully electric ForTwo will be on sale to the public beginning in 2010.

We would expect the production model to be equipped with lithium batteries and have better range than the Zebra-equipped models currently on the roads. So far, no firm pricing information has been provided, though Dr. Z says he doesn't believe consumers would be willing to pay a large surcharge. The total cost of the smart ev would also depend on whether the automaker chooses to sell the batteries with the car or lease them seperately -- both options are currently on the table. We look forward to hearing more about the new model in the coming months, especially to find out what markets will be blessed with its presence. Stay tuned. Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

Beijing shuts down auto traffic in preparation for the Olympics; Europe recommits to windpower; and Optisolar proves itself the darling of green investment.

Emergency Beijing Olympic pollution scheme begins: A month before the Summer Olympics, Beijing’s mandatory power-down to improve air quality is underway. While Beijing is one of the world’s most notoriously polluted cities, China has promised clean air in time for Olympic competition. Nearby industry is being shut down for the duration, new construction is being brought to a standstill, and the Chinese government hopes to idle about 60 percent of Beijing’s 3.3 million cars. Europe’s Largest Single Onshore Windfarm to be Built in Scotland: Scotland has upped the ante when it comes to gargantuan windfarms. Tesla Motors Unveils Jaw-Dropping Menlo Park Showroom: With a well-heeled customer base of Silicon Valley kingpins, celebrities, and car collectors capable of dropping $100 thousand dollars on a high-end sports car, it’s not surprising that Tesla Motors spared no expense when it came to hiring decorators for its new showroom. As the star-struck bloggers of Techcruch noted, the company’s swank new Menlo Park showroom — minutes from Palo Alto — features a stylish “industrial chic” look designed to excite the senses and loosen the pocketbook. At Saturday’s VIP grand opening party: Google’s Sergey Brin and Larry Page, plus a handful of Teslas you can’t actually purchase. The company is currently cranking out about four a week, on the way to about 40 a week by early next year. (Techcrunch)

BMW Confirms Electric MINIs Coming to America, but Is No-Comment on Diesels: Yes, American drivers will have a shot at the hotly anticipated electric MINIs, after all. It has been a few weeks rumors began to circulate that BMW might send plug-in versions of the MINI Stateside. Now a company spokesperson confirms that 500 MINIs are, indeed, earmarked for California showrooms. No word on a diesel version, and details on pricing have still not been released. OptiSolar Quietly Piling On Cash: Analysts are warning that the solar market may cool off with a reduction in government subsidies, but that not chilling the entire solar energy sector. Take the high-flying OptiSolar, a big-talking, thin film manufacturer that claims it has a huge photovoltaic power plant in the works. The company is raising money faster than it can take it to the bank. Earth2Tech estimates the company has piled on about $200 million in recent months, demonstrating the market’s continued excitement with anything solar. (Earth2Tech)

Ryan Mickle is looking to get rid of his $60,000, 2006 Range Rover SUV and he needs your help. No, he doesn't want to sell it to you (good luck with that), he wants to take it off the road. Forever.

Mickle reasons that if he just sold the Range Rover to someone else, it would just keep on polluting, with someone else driving. I would argue that one person driving your old SUV and you driving a more fuel-efficient car (or not driving at all) is better than two people driving SUVs, since the other person probably would have went and bought one anyway. But I digress.

Check out Ryan's website at onefewer.com where Ryan asks, "What is the most earth-friendly way to part company with this mechanical mistake?" You can email Ryan with your suggestions at ryan at onefewer dot com and sign up for updates.

Some suggestions that Ryan has already received include dismantling it and selling the pieces to artists, turning it into a garden or giving it to a car-sharing coop that will pack 6 work commuters in it every day.

There's a new Tesla Roadster review making its rounds on the interweb. So, what makes this particular review special? After all, it's not like we haven't read numerous reports from those lucky enough to find themselves in the drivers seat of the stunning electric roadster, including one from our very own Sam Abuelsamid. This particular ride report comes courtesy of Mr. Martin Eberhard, who just recently got the keys to the Roadster he'd been waiting to receive seemingly forever. The lucky driver goes by the name TEG, and it sounds like he very much enjoyed his time with Martin and the brand spankin' new EV.

Not everything with the car is perfect, of course, with entry and exit being the main usability complaint. Also, Martin's car is still fitted with the first-generation drivetrain, meaning it only has use of second gear in the two-speed transmission. Production Tesla's will get what's known internally as drivetrain 1.5, which features a single gear with a slightly more powerful motor. Check out the entire story here, and feel free to watch a quick video of the encounter after the break.

A sampling of green-tech news with quick commentary.

There's lots of green-car action taking place at this years British International Motor Show (BIMS) and although we can't be there in person, our vlogger pal Danny is. Today, Danny has a fresh interview with Darryl Siry from Tesla who was at the show to check out the Lightning GT reveal accompany a Roadster while it sits on display for the public to longingly cast their eyes upon. Mr. Siry was forthcoming in answering most of his queries and we were able to glean a few interesting bits of Tesla news.

The most important information was about the state of European Roadster sales. Although he wouldn't give an exact figure, Danny did manage to wrest from the marketing VP that they've sold several dozen, in fact, they are "pretty soon going to close in on a hundred". They expect to sell the entire European allotment of 250 units for 2008 before the end of the year. Another eyebrow raiser was the mention of plans for Euro stores, including one on the outskirts of London, possibly in the direction of Surrey. They go on to discuss other things such as the Model S deployment strategy, batteries and the Roadster drivetrain 1.5. If you're in need of a Tesla fix with a British accent, hit the jump.
